Treatment options for Erectile Dysfunction

There are various methods for treating E.D. Your doctor can discuss all of these options with you in more detail. All decisions regarding your best option for treating E.D. should be made between you and your physician, with consideration given to your individual needs.

The treatment options we will review include:

> Drug Therapy

Drugs for treating impotence can be taken orally, injected directly into the penis, or inserted into the urethra at the tip of the penis.

       >> Oral

Therapy with medication has undergone significant further development in recent years, specifically in the field of so-called PDE5 inhibitors. A selection of medications which act specifically on the smooth muscle of the cavernous bodies and ensure an increased blood supply is therefore available to the men affected.

Known potential side effects:

· Headaches.
· Facial blushing.
· Upset stomach.
· Mild and temporary visual effects.

     >> Injection

Many men gain potency by injecting drugs into the penis, causing it to become engorged with blood.

The advantage of injection therapy is:

· It can easily be self-administered.

Potential side effects of injection therapy include:

· Fibrosis (scarring).
· Long-lasting painful erections.
· Drop-out rates range from 24 – 42% with 70% of men discontinuing therapy within 5 years.

Reasons for dropping out included:

· Desire for a permanent treatment alternative.
· Inadequate response.
· Return of spontaneous erections.
· Fear of needles.
· Concern over side effects.

There are also other non invasive treatments:

· Oral testosterone
· Insertable drugs (ex. MUSE®)
· Vascular surgery
· Vacuum devices
Your doctor can provide you with specific details about the pros and cons of each of the following treatments.

> Penile Implants

A penile implant is a device that is placed into a man’s body and is designed to help him get an erection, it is a long-term solution. Following the routine outpatient procedure, a four to eight week recovery period is necessary before the implant is used.

There are two basic types of penile implants that Coloplast offers:

Both enable men with erectile dysfunction to have a satisfactory erection for sexual intercourse and to experience the joys of sex again. You should be able to have an orgasm with a penile implant if you were able to have one before your surgery, unless you have another medical problem that affects it. Consult your physician about this. The primary difference between the two implant types is that flexible rod implants (the Genesis) produce a permanently firm penis, while the inflatable implants (the Titan) produce a controlled, more natural erection.

Inflation & deflation instructions

To Simulate an Erection

To transfer the fluid to the cylinders, locate the pump in the scrotum. Squeeze the pump firmly a few times between the thumb and fingers until an erection is achieved.

To Return to a Flaccid State

Fluid pressure in the cylinders is released when the patient depresses the deflate valve buttons to enable fluid to return to the reservoir, thus returning the penis to the flaccid state.

To Achieve a Flaccid State More Quickly

Squeeze the penis gently with the other hand after depressing the deflate valve buttons. If any problems are encountered during the use of this device, or any pain or discomfort are experienced, please contact your doctor immediately.
