> Porges, Urology Specialist since more than 100 years

1893-2011: 108 years of close relationships with surgeons
to be closer from their needs. Porges provides a high level of service with a wide range of adapted product which contributed to the strong reputation of Porges products worldwide.

Porges Laboratories were established in Sarlat (France) by Fernand Porgès in 1893. The company manufactured a comprehensive range of medical devices for urology and surgery, including the first catheters for draining and voiding the bladder urine:

 Fernand Porgès

Catheters were then hand made: process consisted in weaving silk fibers (including side eyelets) for making tubings that were then dipped into gum, marked, punched and hand polished. Later, René and Lucien, the sons of Fernand, together with Richard and Raoul, the sons of Jules (Fernand’s brother) introduced polymers (PVC), then a revolutionary innovation, in the manufacturing of catheters, in replacement of silk/gum or natural rubber. In the 1950's, the dipping of moulds into latex was introduced for the manufacturing of balloon catheters.

In 1979, Synthelabo (now within Sanofi-Aventis), the pharmaceutical branch of L'Oreal acquired Porges.

In 2001, Mentor Corporation (USA) acquired Porges.

In 2006, Coloplast (Denmark) acquired Porges Laboratories.
